The aims of the Physical Education Curriculum at Hearsall Academy are:

  • To build an awareness of the ‘positive mental health’ benefits of regular exercise and activity
  • To promote the idea of leading a healthy, active life
  • To develop physical knowledge and skills
  • To participate and perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of activities/sports
  • To build engagement in physical activity for sustained periods of time
  • To promote character building, self-improvement and teamwork skills in competitive sport
  • To develop confidence and excellence across a variety of sports.

Delivering the PE Curriculum at Hearsall Academy:

In Nursery and Reception, children’s physical development is supported through sensory explorations and the development of strength and co-ordination.  Planned opportunities for PE, both indoors and outdoors, develop children’s core strength, stability, balance, spatial awareness, co-ordination and agility.

In Years 1-6, children will learn and develop a range movements and skills within timetabled discrete PE lessons.  Two sports / physical activities are taught each half term:

Swimming:

Before leaving primary school, our goal is for children to ‘swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres’.

Enrichment Opportunities:

We work closely with a range of different partners and agencies to give our children diverse opportunities to access competitive sports. Children will be encouraged to compete against themselves, as well as individuals and teams from other schools within and beyond the Inspire Trust.

‘After School’ PE Clubs at Hearsall:

After School Sports Clubs play an important role in encouraging exercise above and beyond the weekly two-hour expectation. They also provide a space for children to build confidence, benefit from smaller group teaching, and advance in their special talent or passion and to build on teamwork, communication and life skills.

School Games

We are delighted to announce that we, Hearsall Community Academy, have achieved the School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2023/24 academic year.

The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.

With a total of young people competing in local inter-school competitions this year, we are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our competitions possible.

As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year.

We look forward to applying once again in 2025!
