At Hearsall Community Academy, we believe that mathematics is essential for everyday life and for understanding our world. We aim to ensure that children have a strong understanding of what they learn so that they can use their mathematical skills accurately and efficiently and can apply these to creatively solving problems.
In line with the new 2014 National Curriculum, we have updated the way mathematics is taught across our Multi-Academy Trust and have developed age related expectations and programmes of study for Years 1 to 6 in line with increased expectations. We have revised calculation routeways and planning to support this. We have also adopted the Numicon approach to teaching mathematics to further enhance children’s understanding.
As the children progress through our school, we aim to develop their fluency in mathematics by practising the fundamentals of calculating rapidly and accurately, using efficient methods. Reasoning mathematically and explaining is an important aspect of our lessons which supports children in using their prior knowledge and making links.
We aim for all children to enjoy mathematics and embrace the challenges that it can provide, to enable them to demonstrate mastery in this subject!
