Children are born ready, able and eager to learn. They actively reach out to interact with other people, and in the world around them. However, development is not an automatic process, it depends on each unique child having opportunities to interact in positive relationships and enabling environments.
In Reception we will be using and following a document called The Development Matters, which acts as guidance for the Early Years Foundation Stage, and enables us to clearly assess and progress each child’s learning.
There are three prime areas of The Development Matters; Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language and Physical Development. Then there are also four specific areas; Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.
The Key Characteristics of Effective Learning, which underpin all areas of learning, are as follows:
- playing and exploring
- active learning
- creating and thinking critically
Each area of learning and development is covered across the year through planned, purposeful play and through a mix of adult-led and child-initiated activity. Play is essential for children’s development, building their confidence as they learn to explore, to think about problems, and to relate to others. Children learn by leading their own play, and also by taking part in play which is guided by adults.
At Hearsall Academy we ensure that we respond to each child’s emerging needs and interests, guiding their development through exciting, enriching and positive interaction. We do not dictate the children’s learning, but instead let them lead us to plan for their personalised and discovery-led learning. During the transition process, we invest heavily in getting to know each child personally, so as to be able to inspire them to learn in a natural process which is underpinned by their own interests. After all, it is during play that children learn how to learn.
